Latest NYC Spots

On my most recent trip to NYC, I visited Aldo Sohm Wine Bar…again…but also tried the new-ish Mexican hot spot, Cosme, from world-renowned Chef Enrique Olvera. Aldo Sohm has amazing wine and one of the best wines by the glass menus in the city; the stemware is also top notch. All the servers are trained sommeliers and from time to time they open up a special bottle and offer to share it with their customers. On this particular evening I had the pleasure of tasting an amazing Gruner Veltliner from Brundlmayer…in a magnum of course!19168310568_64f6fe472c_kThe small bites menu is pretty solid, and meant to be shared, but I would stick with the charcuterie and the pates; however, these spicy chicarrones are pretty solid!

The following evening was Cosme, which took a few tries to get a decent reservation, and the place was packed. Their menu is mainly composed of small plates starting with lighter flavors to heavy, ending with the $60 duck carnitas for two…I’m sure they’re tasty but we passed. There is a ton of creativity in the dishes, but many failed to “wow” me or left me wanting more; too many were just “ok”, especially at these elevated prices.┬áThe service was a little clunky as well, with long periods of time between dishes and often servers dropping off food without explaining what it was or seeing if you needed anything; we had to ask for water refills and additional drinks every time they were needed. On the positive side, bucking an all too familiar NYC trend, the tables were actually spaced out and you could have a conversation without shouting our hearing intimate details of the conversation occurring next door.┬áThat being said, the following are some of my favorites of the evening.

Razor clams, celery salsa, crystal hot sauce

This was my favorite dish of the evening, and I loved the addition of the squeeze bottle of Valentina sauce! It would have been much better had a not just had one three times this size at The Aviary in Chicago the week before…for half the price.

Maybe I just ordered poorly, but I was definitely expecting more from Cosme; next time I will let someone else order for me…and pay.
