Old Standbys – Tasty China

As most people who are frequent readers of this site know, I absolutely love Tasty China and am really excited to see what they do at Ponce City Market. A lot of people ask me what to order, and I usually respond with about ten dishes. Obviously if you have a large group this works,  but most folks are dining for two or four so if you can only order 4 dishes these are the ones to order. Even if there are only two of you order these and get a doggy bag!

The dan dan noodles are the perfect foray into their fiery style of cooking, and at ~$6 this is a steal. Many have tried to copy this dish, but few have succeeded! Up next would be the dry fried eggplant which also packs a punch and can appease any vegetarians in the group.

My next choice would either be the Shan City Chicken or Shrimp; both are expertly fried and mixed with schezuan peppercorns, garlic and dried red chilies…don’t eat the chilies. I actual prefer the shrimp over the chicken as it tends to have more moisture.

Last up is my absolute favorite dish they serve: braised fish in chili oil…yes it’s hot, and has about 3 tablespoons of dried red chilies in it, but the flavors are amazing and the texture of the fish is sublime. The fish is light and flakey and it;s juxtaposed by the the thick cut cabbage and bok choy. This is the most intoxicating dish I have ever had; get a bowl of white rice and ladle in some the fish and the broth and eat the rice last.

This would be my death row meal…along with some seared foie gras, chicken liver mousse, toro, lardo, uni and some H&F crusty bread…
