Simple…that’s the best way to describe the food offered to the patrons of The Masters golf tournament, but simple in a good way. Cheap, clean, simple southern comfort food that is all one hand friendly (you need the other for the $3 beer…yes…$3 beer at a sporting event!)
Everything you have heard about the old school pricing is true and then some; $1.50 for a sandwich and $3 beer…at the most prestigious sporting event in the world? You can get two sandwiches and a beer for less than the price of a single beer at the Braves game; family of four…fed for $20!
All the sandwiches are hand-made and remind you of what your mom or grannie whipped together on a lazy Sunday afternoon for you and your friends, complete with Masters wrapping!
The choices are endless, but I stuck to the classics: pimento cheese and egg salad; again, so simple, but so tasty and nostalgic. The fact that they are less than $2 makes them taste even better, that and being in heaven on earth make up for a lot…
The pimento cheese was my favorite of the old guard, but in the past few years a new challenger has arrived in The Masters BBQ sandwich wrapped in heat retention packaging that kept it super moist and tender.
Speaking of napkins… that is another genius idea behind the food, in that none of it albeit the BBQ, require a napkin, and thus cut down on trash and napkins being blown about the course. There are plenty of concession areas throughout the course and the wait was never longer than a few minutes. The Masters is by far the most well run sporting event in the world; anywhere where a gentleman in a suit directs restroom traffic and ushers patrons to the most convenient urinal is alright by me.
While this has nothing to do with food, I just wanted to share it because it made the day extra cool. For those that don’t know, there is an informal Par 3 contest the day before the tournament and all the golfers involve their kids who get little caddie outfits. If you’ve never been, it’s so worth it to pony up for some practice round tickets, especially Wednesday, and make the trip to Augusta for an experience you will never forget!
